Buffalo Hunting

In his book, Horn of the Hunter, Robert Ruark wrote:

“I don’t know what there is about a Buffalo that frightens me so. Lions and Leopards and Rhinos excite me but don’t frighten me. But the Buff is so big and so mean and ugly and hard to stop, and vindictive and cruel and surly and ornery. He looks like he hates you personally.

He looks like you owe him money. He looks like he is hunting you.”

This is the absolute perfect description of the Buffalo. And that is probably why we Hunters are so fascinated with hunting Buffalo. He’s the ultimate adversary that should never be underestimated. He will test you physically and he will test you mentally. And with him facing you, you don’t want to be measured and found wanting.

Mark Dedekind Safaris has some of the absolute best areas for hunting Buffalo that South Africa has to offer. Thaba Tholo for example, is 50,000ha Reserve with a big Buffalo population. We only hunt the real “Dagga Boys”. The clever old bulls that have a solitary life away from the herds. We hunt them on foot by tracking them as they are often more active at night. During the day as the temperatures rise, they go into cover to rest.

This is one of the purest forms of hunting. Man versus beast on his home field in the thick bush.
